*In the dynamic world of global business, a well - structured and high - performing sourcing team is the linchpin that can drive a company’s success, ensuring cost - effectiveness, quality assurance, and strategic advantage. The sourcing function focuses on identifying new suppliers, exploring markets, and innovation. Purchasing handles the day - to - day transactional aspects, ensuring timely and accurate order fulfillment. The category team specializes in understanding market trends, supplier capabilities, and negotiating long - term agreements.

2.               Procedures & Responsibility (RAIC): Defining clear procedures and responsibilities is crucial. The RAIC (Responsible, Accountable, Informed, Consulted) framework helps eliminate ambiguity. Everyone on the team knows who is responsible for each task, who is ultimately accountable, who needs to be informed, and who should be consulted, leading to more efficient operations.

2.               Select => Develop & Retain Sourcing Talent

1.               Integrity & Performance: When building a sourcing team, integrity is non - negotiable. Sourcing professionals often handle sensitive information and make decisions that can impact the company’s bottom line. Pairing integrity with high performance is the key to a successful team.

2.               Technical 30%, Commercial Skill 70%: In my experience, sourcing is more of a commercial - driven function. While technical knowledge is important (about 30%), commercial skills such as negotiation, relationship management, and market analysis (70%) are even more critical for driving value.

3.               Leading the Sourcing Team

1.               Team Mission & Company Vision: Aligning the team’s mission with the company’s vision is essential. As a leader, it’s your job to communicate this clearly and ensure that every team member understands how their work contributes to the bigger picture.

2.               Leadership & Strategy: Effective leadership involves setting a clear strategy. A good sourcing strategy takes into account market trends, supplier capabilities, and the company’s long - term goals. It provides a roadmap for the team to follow.

3.               Empower

1.               Handle Feelings First: In a team environment, emotions can run high, especially during challenging projects. As a leader, it’s important to address team members’ feelings first. Acknowledging their concerns and providing support can boost morale and productivity.

2.               Balance Trust & Control: Empowering your team means finding the right balance between trust and control. Trust your team members to do their jobs, but also have appropriate controls in place to ensure accountability.

4.               Business Plan & Deliveries

1.               Daily Management: Effective daily management ensures that the team stays on track. This includes setting clear goals, monitoring progress, and providing timely feedback.

2.               Suppliers & Markets: Keeping a close eye on suppliers and markets is vital. Understanding supplier capabilities, market trends, and competitive landscape helps the team make informed decisions.

4.               Disciplines & Cross - Cultures/Functions

1.               Code of Conduct, Regulations & Law: A sourcing team must operate within the boundaries of ethical and legal standards. Establishing a clear code of conduct and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and laws is non - negotiable.

2.               Multi - Cultures & Functions

1.               Asia & America / Europe: In a globalized world, sourcing teams often work across different cultures. Understanding cultural nuances between regions like Asia, America, and Europe can help build stronger relationships with suppliers and stakeholders.

2.               Key Stakeholders: Collaborating effectively with key stakeholders from different functions within the company is also essential. This cross - functional collaboration can lead to better decision - making and more successful sourcing initiatives.
